A general low-power view of the older ovum and its surrounding endometrium. The ovum is shallowly implanted, with the overlying endometrium thin, atrophic, or definitely necrotic. There is marked edema and hemorrhage in the endometrium adjacent to the ovum, and early decidua developing immediately around the ovum, whereas somewhat removed from it, the endometrium is merely edamatous.
