| The border zone indicated by outline in figure 3. Streamers from the patch of syncytiotrophoblast (Syn.), in the lower right corner of the photograph, have invaded the endometrial stroma. Numerous detached plasmodial cells are also present. The stroma cells show a well marked decidual reaction. A spiral arteriole (Sp.
